Pakri Barwadih

Challenge

To render the PB mine operational. Due to Maoist insurgency, the mine hadn’t been active for a period of ten years. This resulted in negligible economic activity in the region.

Solution

Thriveni was able to begin operations within six months of having been awarded the project, by building confidence in the local community that the mine could generate employment and income for them. Thus, despite the threats, activities progressed.

As part of our women empowerment agenda, we trained a team of fifteen women to operate a 100 tonne dumper truck at the site, and set up a garment manufacturing unit at Guruchatti, Barkagaon. This initiative has rendered the women self-reliant and financially independent.

Benefit

Pakri Barwadih Coal Mines, one of the largest captive coal blocks allotted to NTPC by Government of India with an extractable reserve of around 642 million tonnes, was rendered operational.
