Conversion to Electric Energy Excavators

Challenge

To reduce the environmental impact of mining, by saving fuel and reducing CO2 emissions.

Solution

We deployed a diesel HEMM excavator, the EX 2500 that had been converted to an electric drive, the very first of its kind in India. Assuming that the replacement electric energy is green, post conversion, the machine’s expected reduction in CO2 emission would be around 2.7 million kg per annum. This is currently operational at the Pakri Barwadi coal project.

Our in-house technology and innovation team successfully carried out the conversion of the 900 KW machine and received a commendation from the OEM Hitachi. The requisite parts for the conversion process were designed and manufactured in India, thus furthering the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

With the support of an ecosystem of vendors, we have indigenously developed technology for ultra-heavy loaders and dump trucks to be retrofitted to run electrically or on dual fuel using LNG, thereby reducing the carbon footprint by burning less diesel. The OEMs commended our efforts.

Such initiatives underline our major efforts towards sustainability and augment India’s efforts towards this goal. The benefits of these initiatives are:

  • This project of EX 2500 has been successfully completed and clocked around 1000 Hrs and also Komatsu PC300 have been successfully commissioned.
  • Along with the successful development of Ex2500, a fleet of 22 machines are ready and to be converted into electrical machine.
  • Reduction of 72,520 Ton of CO2 savings per year.
  • Reduced downtime due to lower maintenance requirements.
  • Higher availability due to elimination of refuelling or service time.
